The Electoral Commission on Friday evening officially closed nomination of candidates to contest for the Serere county Parliamentary by-election in Serere District.
Five candidates were nominated by the Serere District Returning Officer Ms. Sylvia Cheptegei Nagendo in a two day exercise conducted on Thursday and Friday.
Among the Nominated candidates include Alice Alaso of The Alliance for National Transformation (ANT), Emmanuel Eratu of Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), Phillip Oucor of National Resistance Movement (NRM), Emmanuel Omoding (independent) and Martin Onguruco (independent).
Some Opposition Key political parties like Democratic Party (DP) and NUP did not front candidates to contest in this by-election but chose to support ANT’s Alice Alaso.
The nominated candidates will today have a meeting with the Electoral Commission to discuss the guidelines for the campaign.
Seven aspirants had picked up nomination forms from the EC but two of them withdrawn. Mr. Gilbert Etomet (Jeema), who was meant to be on the nomination list, said he had withdrawn in favor of the son of Okabe.
According to the Serere District Returning Officer Ms. Sylvia Cheptegei Nagendo, a total of 75,000 voters are expected to part in the voting exercise upon verification of the voters across the seven sub-counties making Serere county.
Ms Sylvia Cheptegei Nagendo, appealed to the nominated candidates to have a peaceful procession around the constituency as they wait for the official campaign schedule that starts on Monday.
Nominated candidates will then conduct campaign meetings for nine (9) days from 13th to 21st February 2023. Serere county residents will finally vote for their next Member of Parliament on February 23, 2023.
The parliamentary seat for Serere county fell vacant following the death of Hon. Patrick Okabe, the county’s former Member of Parliament. Okabe died in an accident along the Tirinyi- Mbale road on December 19, 2022.
