KANUNGU: Kanungu district government Primary, Secondary and Tertiary schools on thursday received phones to help in teacher effectiveness and learner achievements.
Kanungu district has 149 government aided Primary schools, 21 Secondary Schools and 4 tertiary institutions and each received a phone. These phones will help in recording the daily attendance of both teachers and Students.
Ambrose Mwesigye Amanyire the RDC Kanungu commended the government for the integrated digital awareness program.
He encouraged the headteachers to involve themselves in the Parish Development Model PDM especially the pillar of ICT.
He called upon teachers and headteachers to champion the fight against environmental degradation by starting environmental clubs in their schools through which messages of conservation can be shared, he reminded Ugandan to vacate wetlands or use them in friendly ways like fish farming.
Mwongyera Henry the Kanungu district vice Chairperson said that he is always dismayed by the performance of government schools especially in National exams adding that with the gadgets in place they will curb late coming and absenteeism.
He added that this will ensure concentration of teachers hence better performance, he said that if he was to propose with the favour of procedures of public service and constitutional amendment of Uganda some teachers contracts would be renewed according to the basis of the academic performance.
Sunday Charles the DEO Kanungu congratulated all head teachers and principals upon heading into an era of innovation in the department in education which is in charge of quality assurance through a mechanism of easy communication.
Shaban Adam the District Inspector of Schools assured the head teachers that the gadgets received will reduce on their challenges of teachers absenteeism because they will be updating facial recognition of teachers daily and number of pupils.
The Ministry of Education under a designed system of Teachers Effectiveness and Learners Achievements (TELA) launched a smart phone campaign to monitor the performance and absenteeism of teachers in schools.
According to government, “TELA monitoring system is a platform which enables information exchange between various stakeholders in the management of primary schools and secondary schools to ensure teachers’ details are electronically captured.”
The system which is operated on the mobile devices with an android operating system will ensure teachers are monitored right from their arrivals at school.
