SECURITY: The Professional Standards Unit of the Uganda Police Force has opened an investigation into the alleged beating and torture of the Woman Member of Parliament for Buvuma District Hon Suzan Mugabi and some of her supporters, while stopping them from holding Women’s Day cerebrations at Kyanja village, Bweema sub-county in Buvuma district last week.
The summoned officers include; SP Kanyesigye Jamal the D/RPC, SP Bagoole Michael – DPC Buvuma, AIP Odeke Francis, CPL Wamanga David, PC Obalim, PC Turyahebwa Akim, PC Ahamize Brave, PC Olari Albert John, PC Egwel Peter Aggrey, PC Kabaheka Benson and PC Makomeli Emma Kevin.
The Police Spokesperson CP Fred Enanga on Monday 24th April 2023, told the Press that Hon Suzan Mugabi and her supporters had defied the guidelines from the District security committees, following disagreements between Buvuma Women’s Council and the Woman MP. As a result, the district security team dispersed the unlawful gathering and also arrested 4 suspects. However, some of the officers aggressively man-handling the protesters.
Enanga said as soon as the video came to the attention of the IGP, he immediately ordered the PSU to institute inquiries and ensure officers who committed acts of violence are held accountable.
“The UPF as an institution continues to stand for the rule of law and will hold any one accountable, who commits acts of torture,” Enanga said
On Thursday, several dignitaries left Parliament for Buvuma Island District to join Mugabi for the celebrations which were scheduled for Friday. Upon reaching, security started engaging in running battles to deny leaders clearance to pull up the function.
In an attempt to have the function up and running, the MP, on Friday morning put up the temporary structures required to have a function including tents.
However, she was denied access to the venue prompting an exchange and confrontation with the security operatives.
The MP was later sprayed with teargas and was beaten by the security officials.
Uganda Police Authority recently also suspended the officer who attacked a section of journalists on duty with pepper spray and teargas as they covered a news report.
The suspended officer was identified as No 49563 Corporal Ogwal Yeeko attached to Wandegeya Police Station in Kampala.
The inhumane incident happened on April 11th 2023 at around 9:30 am as the journalists covered the arrest of Pre-medical Interns who attempted to march to Parliament over the delayed commencement of the medical internship.
