SSESE ISLANDS: Kalangala District Woman Member of Parliament Hon. Helen Nakimuli last week launched a campaign to fundraise for the establishing the ever first women and youth skilling center in Ssese Islands.
The campaign was launched on Friday May 5th 2023, during the commemoration of Kalangala District Women’s Day at Kibanga Primary School play grounds
During the Launch, MP Nakimuli said when she was a young girl, she had a dream to empower her fellows to create a change in our day today lives.
“I’m so happy that I have been doing this & more but this Kalangala Women & Youth Skilling Center (Fundraising) will really bring my dream to life as it will impact lives. Let’s get the skills & create our own jobs to curb the unemployment which constitutes a large number of Ugandans more so the youths.” Nakimuli said
MP Nakimuli during the fundraising was accompanied by fellow Legislators led by the Leader of Opposition Mathias Mpuuga, Hon. Francis Katabaazi (Kalungu East), Hon Juliet Kakande (Masaka City Woman MP) Hon. Joyce Bagala (Mityana District WMP), Hon. Twaha Kagabo (Bukoto South), Hon. Myanja Ssentayi among others, Kalangala District leaders, Religious leaders, members of the Private sector, the business community and other stakeholders
Over 40 million Uganda shillings were collected to construct a Women and Youth Skilling Center on Friday.
The Skilling Center will be located in the heart of Kalangala Town council at a piece of land which was donated by the former Ssese county Chief (Kweeba).
It is estimated to cost billions of Uganda shillings upon completion and it is targeted to offer hands on training to Women and the Youth.
The Center will train Women and Youths in the District without considering their levels of education
Kalangala currently has one Vocational school called Ssese Farm School owned by the Government of Uganda, but it trains only Secondary school leavers with a minimum of a Uganda Certificate of Education.
The only industrial hub where Kalangala Youths can get free skills training is the government owned Masaka Regional Industrial Hub located in Masaka city, but it takes only 24 students from each district in the region.
Apart from the skilling center, Hon. Nakimuli who is also the shadow Minister of Fisheries has worked tooth and nail towards the development of Kalangala communities by providing community supporting equipment like Tents to all the 17 Parishes, saucepans, lawnmowers(grass cutting machines) etc as a long run remedy to eradicate poverty.
Kalangala District was made a district in 1989, having been a sub-district of Masaka District. The district was fully decentralised in 1996 and has since registered political stability and advancement, with the three C’s (Consultation, Coordination and Communication) as the district values and the cores of service delivery.
The District has a total land area of 432sq. km with 2 Counties, 6 sub counties and 1 Town council. It is estimated that 80% of the population aged 10 years and above are engaged in Fisheries and Agriculture as a livelihood. The proportion that is engaged in elementary occupations stands at 12%, while service workers take on 8%.
