TRAVEL ALERT: The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has finally opened a section of Katonga Bridge but to STRICTLY Light traffic.
In an official statement released by UNRA on May 31st 2023, the bridge shall be used by light traffic which include strictly Motorbikes, Saloon cars, Station wagons (SUVs), 14 seater vans (Taxi) and 28 seater vans (Coasters)
According to UNRA, any vehicles in the above category shall not be allowed to cross the bridge.
“The Bridge shall be a one access and therefore travelers should expect some delays. Drivers are required to strictly follow the guidelines of the traffic officers, the signs and the markings on the road for safety and to avoid delays,” the statement reads.
The Roads Authority adds that further structural integrity assessment shall be carried out to determine the use of the bridge by heavier vehicles.
“Therefore, buses and lorries or trucks of any type are prohibited from using the bridge until further notice. other interventions will continue with the objective of reinstating the road to its full use in the shortest time possible,” UNRA said
On May 28, 2023, the Uganda Police and the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) advised motorists and pedestrians using Kampala-Masaka highway to use an alternative route of Mpigi-Kanoni- Maddu- Ssembabule- Masaka, & vice versa which is approximately 210km following the abrupt flooding of River Katonga which crosses the highway.
Efforts have since been made to reinstate the bridge to traffic flow.
