The Bishop of West Buganda Diocese in the Church of Uganda Rt. Rev. Bishop Henry Katumba Tamale on Sunday September 3rd 2023, cerebrated his 7th Anniversary as the Bishop of West Buganda Diocese.
The cerebration was held at St St. Stevens Church Kashagama in Lyantonde District.
In his homily, Bishop Katumba praised the Lord for enabling him serve for seven years in the Western Diocese and warned that the West Buganda Diocese will no longer recruit priests, deacons and lay leaders without a minimum of Uganda Certificate of Education.
He said religious leaders with some qualifications in Education can help in transforming the church and preaching with knowledge and handling social problems
The Rev. Henry Katumba-Tamale was consecrated and enthroned as Bishop of West Buganda Diocese on 28th August 2016 at St. Paul’s Cathedral, Kako in Masaka. He is the sixth bishop of West Buganda Diocese in the Church of Uganda
Rev. Katumba received Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Saviour and was born again in August 1984 during the commissioning service for a mission in Namirembe Diocese.
Rev. Katumba served in Namirembe Diocese as the Bishop’s Personal Research and Information Assistant and Parish priest of Kamuli Parish. From 2005 – 2015, he served at Uganda Christian University as Male Warden and Land and Farm Supervisor at UCU’s farm in Ntawo. He has also served as the Acting In-charge of Kitchen and Dining, and Acting Dean of Students at UCU.
He has also served as a tutor at Uganda Martyrs’ Seminary, Namugongo, the Acting Principal of Bishop Hannington Theological Institute in Mombasa, Kenya, and a parish priest in various parishes in Namirembe Diocese.
Rev. Katumba was ordained a deacon in 1986 and a priest in 1988 in Namirembe Diocese.
Rev. Katumba earned a Bachelor of Divinity (Hons) from Bishop Tucker Theological College in 1995, having earned both Diplomas and Certificates in Theology prior to that. He has also received a Post-Graduate Diploma in Community Based Rehabilitation from Kyambogo’s Institute of Teacher Education.
His election was made by the House of Bishops of the Church of Uganda sitting in Namirembe on 1st June 2016.
Rev. Katumba is married to the Rev. Elizabeth Julia Katumba-Tamale and they have five children. He succeeded the Rt. Rev. Jackson Matovu, who was the Caretaker Bishop of West Buganda Diocese after the untimely death of the Rt. Rev. Godfrey Makumbi, Bishop of West Buganda Diocese, in June 2015.
