SSESE COUNTY: The Kingdom of Buganda has warned on the new HIV/AIDS infections resulting from Homosexuality
The warning was made by the Deputy Katikkiro of the Kingdom and Minister of ICT Dr. Twaha Kawaase Kigongo during the Buganda Women’s Convention and Women’s Day cerebrations of 2023 held at Ssese islands Beach Hotel in Ssese County on Friday, May 20th 2023.
Dr. Kawaase said the Kingdom of Buganda has strived to curb the spread of HIV?AIDS through different mechanisms including the elimination of Mother to Child transmission, but there is a new formula of spreading HIV/AIDS caused by Homosexuals yet they leave their wives at home.
“Men are spear heading the new spread of HIV by involving in Homosexuality yet Women at home haven’t identified this problem. Women should always notice acts of men using women Vaseline, decorating themselves with ear rings and designing hair styles. Our people must stick on our cultural norms to eliminate the spread of HIV/AIDS.” he said
The Deputy Premier also asked women to adopt use of ICT, to ensure income generation, avoid AIDS and domestic violence.
He said men are now victims of Digital and social media abuse which according to research involves tracking movements, checking their mobile phones, putting inciting WhatsApp statuses to send silent messages, etc.
Dr. Vincent Bagambe, the Commissioner from Uganda Aids Commission commended his Majesty the Kabaka of Buganda for his Ambassadorial role in sensitizing his subjects and the people of Uganda in fighting against HIV/AIDS.
He said with science and Technology they are able to diagnose the disease, implement PMTCT programs by collaborating with orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) programs, and challenged other cultural leaders to embrace technology to reach “at risk areas”, and deliver HIV Message
Dr. Bagambe said the Prevalence of HIV/AIDS in Buganda is at 8.5% but Ssese county (Kalangala District) is at 16% out of the 1.4million people living with HIV in Uganda with 1000 new cases reported every week, countrywide.
Hon. Helen Nakimuli, the Kalangala District Woman MP and Shadow Minister for Fisheries said, 51% of Women according to statistics are suffering from HIV/AIDS and domestic Violence which limits Development.
Hon. Nakimuli commended the Kingdom of Buganda for delivering Palliative and Health care to women the pillars of family and development. She pledged total support towards the Kingdom activities and the Nabagereka
The Shadow Minister for ICT and Mawogola South MP Hon. Goreth Namugga also echoed Owek. Kawaase’s message and urged people of Buganda especially in the Islands to adopt the use of technology for Marketing and income generating activities.
The Buganda Women’s Convention 2023 started on Wednesday with a health camp at Kasekulo Landing site and a Family Counseling & Development Session on Thursday organised by the Kingdom of Buganda, and was attended by women from the I8 counties of Buganda under the theme of Using Technology to stop the HIV / AIDS Prevalence & Domestic Violence
