IN LOVING MEMORY: The Roman Catholic Church in Uganda has today 3rd April 2023, paid tribute to the Late former Archbishop of Kampala Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga, two years after his death.
Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga has been remembered as a good shepherd who laid down his life for his sheep.
The recollection came as the Church held a memorial mass to mark the 2nd Anniversary of his death.
Dr. Lwanga was found dead in his room on the morning of the 3rd April 2021, just hours after leading the way of the cross at Namirembe. The public received the news of his demise in shock since he had appeared before the public on the previous day.
The First Mass has been celebrated by his predecessor, the Archbishop of Kampala His Grace Paul Ssemogerere before laying wreaths at the tomb of the deceased Archbishop within the Cathedral.
Archbishop Ssemogerere praised the Late Lwanga as a good shepherd who worked entirely for body and spirit.
The second Mass is being celebrated by the Retired Archbishop Augustine Kasujja, the first African to be appointed Apostolic Nuncio, at 1pm and the third Mass at 5:30pm will be celebrated by Fr. Steven Mayanja, all in the memory of the fallen Prelate.
Biography
Born in 1953, at Kyabakadde Village, in Naggalama Parish, in Mukono district, the Late Archbishop Kizito Lwanga attended Kyabakadde primary school before joining Nyenga Seminary in 1964.
Between 1972 and 1974, he studied at Katigondo National Major Seminary, in the present-day Kalungu District.
He then studied Theology at Ggaba National Seminary, in Kampala and in 1979, he joined the University of Clermont-Ferrand in France, were he studied administration and languages, with particular emphasis on administration.
Later, he studied at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross in Rome, wherein 1994, he earned a doctorate in Canon Law.
He was ordained a priest on 8 April 1978 at Rubaga Cathedral by Cardinal Emmanuel Kiwanuka Nsubuga.
He served as a priest of Kampala Archdiocese until 30 November 1996.
Lwanga was appointed the first Bishop of the Kasana-Luweero Diocese in 1996.
In 2006, he was appointed the third Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Kampala to succeed Cardinal Emmanuel Wamala who resigned.
Lwanga was known to be vocal and was on several occasions taken a swipe at government over its excesses and violation of human rights.
