MASAKA CITY: Masaka residents are filled with joy and excitement as newly created city gets ever first Clock tower.
The clock tower branded under Airtel Uganda logos and colours which is under completion is being elected in Nyendo town at a place commonly known as “Welcome” Roundabout, which is the gateway to Masaka city.
The excitement is observed on social media platforms especially on Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp where Masaka dwellers are posting photos of the City clock which was opened to the public space a few days ago with writings like “Masaka enfunye essaawa ya Queen” however much its not yet launched by the construction company and contractors.
The Word “Essaawa ya Queen” comes from the commonly known first clock tower in Kampala which was launched by the now the Late Queen of England Elizabeth II in 1954. However, the Clock tower was recently demolished to pave way for the construction of the new Kampala flyover.
In November 2022, Capital Outdoor Advertising Co. Ltd and Masaka City authorities embarked on upgrading Nyendo-Welcome Roundabout which is the gateway to Masaka city.
Masaka City entered a partnership with Capital Outdoor Advertising Co. Ltd to remodel roundabouts on major roundabouts in Masaka city starting with the Nyendo roundabout to change the face of the newly elevated town to city status.
The roundabout is upgraded with a new City clock which will be making alarm at the top of the hour and also other unique features that have improved the beauty of the area. According to sources, the city clock is yet to be launched.
The contract was awarded to Alpine Construction Ltd and KHC architecture Ltd as the structure Architect.

Some of the Key roundabouts in Masaka city include the one at Nyendo– welcome connecting Mbarara highway, Kampala highway and Broadway, the one at Kijjabwemi along Mbarara road, the one near Masaka secondary school connecting yellow knife road and Edward Avenue in the city center and the one at Katwe opposite Masaka regional Referral Hospital.
Masaka city is currently changing her facelift with a number of newly reconstructed roads, modern solar powered street lighting and a number of private investments ranging from storied buildings and private businesses.
Masaka city now joins other cities like Uganda’s capital Kampala which has related clock towers at Kibuye and Jinja road roundabouts, Mbale city, Mbarara city among other.
