The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) and the Ministry of Education have today released results for the 2022 Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) at State house Nakasero
While releasing results on Thursday morning, the Minister of Education and First Lady, Hon. Janet Kataha Museveni noted that cases of absenteeism had increased which is a great concern to the ministry and UNEB. She noted that students had continued to fail science subjects like Biology and said that government will continue to find means of mitigating this problem.
The Minister of State for higher Education Hon. John Chrysostom Muyingo warned head teachers who are running away from work and even switching off their phones to avoid admitting students. she urged leaders to mobilise learners to go back to school since the current turn up is schools is quite worrying.
According to UNEB, 46,667 students passed in Division One, 76,745 passed in Division two, 88,690 passed in Division three,117,937 passed in Division Four and 15,756 students failed the examinations. A total of 1,035 results has been withheld in accordance with Section 5 (2) (b) of the UNEB Act No 1 of 2021. The number of results withheld has been reducing steadily at this level. Examination centers from which results are withheld will be notified through their portals.
The UNEB Executive Director Mr. Dan Odong said Candidature increased by 16,063 (4.8%) from 333,396 in 2020 to 349,459, in 2022 reversing the decrease of 4,324 (-1.3%) that had been witnessed in the previous examination. The candidates sat from 3,703 centres. Of these, 114,181 (32.7%) were USE beneficiaries.
He said the number of male candidates registered is 175,768 (50.3%) and that of females is 173,691 (49.7%). The difference is 2,077 more males than females who registered for the examination. In 2019, the number of females had surpassed that of the males, for the first time, by 398.
“The gap, in favour of males, appears to be resurfacing. In 2022, 345,695 candidates (173,761 males and 171,934 females) appeared for the examination compared to 330,592 candidates who appeared for the examination in 2020. his is an increase of 15,103 (4.6%) candidates.” Mr. Dan Odong said.
More candidates were absent compared to 2020. Statistics of the number of candidates who registered for, and those who sat the UCE examination for the last 5 years are given in Table.
UNEB ED Dan Odongo said there was an improvement in performance in the large entry subjects except in Christian Religious Education, Biology and Commerce. Mathematics showed better performance at the Distinction level, but declined overall. English Language improved at credit and overall Pass levels but declined at the distinction level. Performance in Biology has continued to decline as seen in the last few years.
“Worth noting is that, performance in Physics and Chemistry has improved, although the overall pass levels are still low. Over 40% of the candidates have not passed the two subjects. The Board examined Chinese Language for the first time in 2022. A total of 134 candidates sat and 124 (92.5%) of them passed. The language is in addition to other major languages; French, German, Arabic, Latin and Kiswahili already are being examined.” he added.
Female candidates performed better than males in English Language. In Chemistry, the male candidates show better performance in the higher grades but, overall, a higher percentage of females obtained at least a pass.
The UNEB chairperson Prof Mary Okwakol while presenting UCE results to the Minister, said the board faced occasioned challenges caused by Ebola outbreak which lasted for 5 weeks. she said there was a significant increase of candidature by 4.8% compared to the 2020 academic year which was affected by the Covid 19 pandemic lockdown.
She said cases of examination malpractice drastically dropped compared to the previous years. She applauded the Board for the oversight role and team work exercised during the examination process.
A total of 349,459 candidates registered for the examination from 4,185 examination centers. This is as compared to 333,395 candidates that registered for the last UCE examination of 2020, indicating an increase of 16,063 in the candidature. 50.3% of the registered candidates were males, while 49.7% were females.
Parents, candidates and other interested parties can now access results through the short message service (SMS) on their telephone handsets. One is required to know the full index number of the candidates, go to the message menu on the phone, type UCE, leave space, type full index number, then send to 6600.
Head teachers and school directors can access the results from their various school portals. UNEB advised to start collecting the hard copies of the results from the UNEB offices on Monday.
