RUKUNGIRI: Two people of the same family were on Wednesday killed by Lightning in Keita Village Nyabitete Parish, Bugangari Subcounty, Rukungiri district.
Kigezi region police spokesperson Elly Maate identifies the deceased as Enoth Tukwasibwe 30 years old and his mother Jolly Baryakabuza 75 years all residents of Bugangari Subcounty, Rukungiri district
Maate told our reporter that the incident happened on 15/03/2023 in the evening where both family members were at home during heavy downpour.
He adds that when the old woman was in the kitchen preparing super and the son was in the main house with the father who was not affected.
According to Maate the Police was alerted by the area chairperson Mr. Warugaba and the scene was visited by CLO AIP Mugisha who addressed the area residents and consoled them of the unfortunate incident.
On Sunday March 12th 2023, 3 people of the same family were also killed by lightning during a heavy hailstorm in Rwamuyora village in Nyarurambi Parish in Muko subcounty in Rubanda district
Lightning is an electrical discharge caused by imbalances between storm clouds and the ground, or within the clouds themselves. Most lightning occurs within the clouds.
According to science, thunder and lightning during rainfall is caused by the negative charged ice crystals are attracted to the positive charge, as well as to charges in nearby clouds and positive charges on the ground. When this attraction is strong enough, the charges join together and discharge, creating flashes of lightning.
