COURT: Masaka High court sets mid-february dates to hear bail applications for jailed MPs Muhammad Ssegirinya and Allan Ssewanyana.
Masaka High court has today set February 13th, 14th and 15th to hear bail applications for jailed MPs Muhammad Ssegirinya and Allan Ssewanyana.
This is after the prosecution led by Richard Birivumbuka informed court that they were not ready to proceed and asked for another date. The trial Judge Lawrence Tweyanze adjourned the case to 13th, 14th and 15th February 2023 for hearing of the said application.
Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago and Sam Muyizzi counsels to the detained Kawempe North Member of Parliament and his counterpart Allan Ssewanyana of Makindye West had lined sureties including Hon. Moses Kasibante, Hon. Ssewungu Gonzaga, Hon. Nyeko Derick and Mrs. Ssendawula mother to Hon. Allan because they expected the court to grant them bail today.
The two legislators are facing trial for several charges including murder, attempted murder, and aiding and abetting terrorism stemming from their alleged involvement in killings that took place in the district of Lwengo and Masaka between March and June 2021.
They pleaded not guilty to the charges and have for several months been pursuing their release on bail in vain. But as part of the process, their lawyers asked for access to the MPs through the courts.
Makindye West MP Allan Ssewanyana is currently critically ill and was admitted at Mulago National referral hospital. Preliminary medical information shows that the legislator has lung related issues, cannot walk or stand on his own and is in great pain and requires specialized medical care.
