MASAKA CITY: Residents of Masaka City have protested the poor state of marram roads in the southern region
Government through its Uganda Support to Municipal Infrastructure Development (USMID) Program phase one and the additional phase ending December 2023 financed by a loan acquired from the World Bank has changed the facelift the New city Masaka by rehabilitating a number of roads in the heart of the city together with the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) which reconstructed the Nyendo- Masaka- Kijjabwemi road (Broadway)
However, a number of marram roads which haven’t been worked upon under the USMID project are currently in a very poor state.
The roads have developed deep galleys, large potholes filled with stagnant water, are slippery and others have broken culverts.
The state of the roads have worsened following the ongoing heavy rains that have rendered a number of roads impassable where motorists are forced to spend several hours maneuvering through potholes and slippery sections.
Some of the horrible roads include Kaddugala-Villa Maria road, Kibisi-Kasanje-Kitante road, Matanga- Lwanda-Kinyerere road, Mpugwe-Nsangamu- Kinyerere road, Kaddugala- Mukungwe-Kako road, Mpugwe- Namakindu-Katwadde road, Kateera- Mirembe-Butale-Kaddugala road, Kidda- Kitengeesa road all in Nyendo-Mukungwe city Division.
Mr. Joseph Kakooza a resident in Kibisi Parish says most of the roads were forgotten by the city leadership and asked concerned parties to grade the said roads to ease access to social services.
Mr. Lumu Ronalf a resident of Masaka town says most of the roads in Mukudde zone in Nyendo Parish, Nnume, Nakayiba zones and Misaali road are all dilapidated and asked the city leadership to find the easiest means of rescuing taxi payers from using impassable roads before the situation goes to a standstill
Following a presidential directive, government recently allocated each district and municipality Shs1 billion for maintenance of roads outside the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) jurisdiction.
The allocation was welcomed by Members of Parliament who said they have often shouldered the burden of road maintenance.
Our efforts to reach the relevant Masaka city Authorities about the matter were futile by Press time
