OBITUARY: Former Member of Parliament for Rubaga South and artiste Hon. Kato Lubwama is dead.
The Popular Ugandan comedian and former Member of Parliament Kato Lubwama was pronounced dead in the wee hours of Wednesday (7th June 2023) morning.
Just after midnight, in the hours of Tuesday night crossing into Wednesday, social media was filled up with the sad news of Kato Lubwama’s demise.
The cause of Lubwama’s death is yet to be revealed but according to reports, he succumbed to a heart attack at Stana Medical Center in Bunamwaya where he often had periodic checkups.
Kato Lubwama has had a history of heart complications in recent years.
In March 2022, the Founder of Diamonds Ensemble, Diamonds Production, and B24 TV Kato Lubwama was hospitalized with heart complications.
He was later flown to Turkey where he underwent a successful operation and he appeared stabilized but always had medical checkups to monitor his health status.
Biography
Kato Lubwama aka Bisso has been a Ugandan politician, drama actor, musician, songwriter, comedian, former radio presenter and businessman. Lubwama was so passionate about music, theatre plays, and helping the needy.
The Former Kaliisoliiso Presenter on CBS FM Paul Kato Lubwama used to perform educative drama, pointing out issues concerning bwananchi against the government. He does revolutionary plays based on changing societies.
Education Background
Kato Lubwama born on 16, August 1970, completed his primary seven (PLE) in 1984, at Nabagereka Primary School.
In 1988, Lubwama sat for his Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE), at Old Kampala Secondary School.
1991-1992, Lubwama obtained his Special University Entry Examination, Certificate Other, at Makerere University Kampala.
1994, Lubwama obtained a Diploma in Music, Dance and Drama, at Makerere University Kampala.
Work Experience
Kato Lubwama is the Director of Royal Theater since 2010 to date, and he’s a drama actor.
Director, Diamonds Ensemble, since 1994. Director Image Africa, since 1999. Member of Parliament, Rubaga South Constituency since 2016 till 2021.
Kato Lubwama was a businessman. He used to deal in the maize flour business and several other businesses including being the director of B24TV in Uganda.
He worked on Radio CBS at the most famous entertainment program for over 15 years with colleagues Abbey Mukiibi and Abu Kawenja.
Politics
Kato Lubwama the former Rubaga South Member of Parliament believed his first term of office was for him to eat, and then his second term would be for him to eat with his voters.
However, unfortunately, Lubwama did not make it to parliament for the second term; he lost the vote to a National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate, Aloysius Charlton Mukasa in the 2021 general elections.
In the run-up to the 2016 general elections, Lubwama was quoted asking voters to send him to Parliament, so that he can also ‘eat’ on that money, given to the legislators.
Kato Lubwama who contested as an independent candidate says he left DP because of its corrupt officials. They formed a pressure group titled ‘Solida’ derived from the word solidarity, and their mission is to regain the former glory of DP.
He was so passionate about DP and that’s why he cannot leave for another party.
Earlier, Habib Buwembo, a voter in Lubaga South challenged Lubwama’s 2016 election for lack of legitimate academic documents, arguing that the legislator connived with Makerere University and was admitted in 1992 for a diploma in Music and Drama yet he hadn’t obtained the minimum mature age which is 25.
In his argument, Buwembo noted that Lubwama was 22 years at that time, which was three years below the mandatory minimum age for mature entry.
Buwembo said the legislator lacked the Primary Leaving, Uganda Certificate of Education (PLE) and Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) documents (or their equivalent) to enable him to attain a parliament job.
Songs
Kato Lubwama was a musician who has released songs like Tulye, Tetunakuta, Bank Yebyama, Abantu Bazibu, Akanaku and Dimitinya and recently on September 25, 2020, Tetunakuta meaning “We are not yet satisfied”.
Family
Kato Lubwama was married to Ann Namuwonge, and together they have six children.
