TRANSPORT: The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has diverted traffic along Kabale-Kisoro road to fix the damaged section at Bwaara village in Hamurwa town council, Rubanda district, following the landslides that severely affected the road. The Hamurwa-Kanungu road caved in and is completely cut off by floods at the Hamurwa floating bridge in Hamurwa town council, Rubanda district.
In a public notice released by UNRA Management on May 4th 2023, the National Roads Authority diverted traffic to Kabale- Katuna- Rubaya- Muko road (88km) for travelers heading to Kisoro and Vice versa from Kisoro to Kabale.
“Following the landslides affecting parts of the sub-region while our emergency response team mobilises the needed equipment to restore the damaged section, traffic has been diverted to Kabale- Katuna-Rubaya-Muko road for travelers heading to Kisoro and Vice versa,” the notice reads.
UNRA has also advised road users to alternatively use Kabale- Lake Bunyonyi road and drive along the road for approximately 4km up to the Kachwekano junction then turn right at Kachwekano- Kagarama through Rubona to Hisesero/Muko (20km). From Muko, motorists are advised to drive along the existing road Kabale-Kisoro highway to Kisoro.
“We continue to appeal to road users across the country to take precaution, avoid using flooded areas for their safety and report flooding incidents for emergency action. We regret the inconvenience caused and appeal for your patience as we expedite work at the affected sections along our road network,” UNRA said.
The Kabale-Kisoro road connects Uganda to the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) through the Bunagana border and Rwanda through the Chanika border. The Hamurwa-Kanungu road connects Uganda to DR Congo through the Ishasha border.
Following the heavy rains across the country, a number of All Weather and Weather loose roads have been affected by either floods or landslides including the Kabale- Kisoro highway.
In other parts of the country, roads crossing into wetlands and rivers have been affected by floods which has led to difficulty to travelers using motor vehicles.
According to news reports, many roads in Kigezi sub region, Mbarara, central region, Northern Uganda and the Eastern have been affected by flooding rivers and wetlands plus landslides due to heavy rains.
The Uganda Meteorological Authority recently forecasted that there will be heavy rains between April and May 2023.
