ENTERTAINMENT: A talent is often defined as a natural aptitude that someone is born with, for example singing, painting or drawing, athletic abilities, playing instruments etc. People often have to work to refine their talents, but they’re generally innate and genetic rather than acquired.
Unlike a skill which is acquired by the person by learning, a talent is an inborn and the special ability of a person to do something. Some people are born with greater potential, but without hard work and practicing their talent will come to nothing.
Wasswa Hakim Jamba 33, a resident of Kawempe- Mbogo in Kawempe Division Kampala is one of the talented instrumentalist who discovered his talent in playing cultural and Jazz instruments that has opened his doors to meet Uganda’s super stars
Our reporter was inspired by Wasswa’s outstanding performance at Kavumba Recreation Center where he had gone to enjoy David Lutalo’s sweet rhythms and he was convinced that Wasswa is one of the best instrumentalists in the Uganda whose talent hasn’t been exposed to the public.
In a meet and greet meeting back stage, Wasswa revealed that he discovered his talent way back in school where he used to play cultural instruments.
By then he was inspired by a friend who used to play cultural instruments until he was then granted an opportunity to train music in some schools like New planet Primary School, Central College Kawempe among others.
In January 2018, he then joined “Da Hares Music band” which is owned by David Lutalo. However, Wasswa never had a dream of meeting a Super Artist like Lutalo, despite his humble background from Kawempe Mbogo.
Although he had concentrated on playing cultural drums, Wasswa’s multi tasking skills opened him another chance of playing Jazz drums again with Da Hares where he has worked for 4 years.
“I had never dreamt of playing instruments for an artist like David Lutalo. We have made several successful projects and I’m thankful to Allah who opened this door for me,” a humble smiling Hakim said.
He adds that however much he hasn’t earned billions of money from his talent, he is thankful for having made a number of good friends, he is making more connections and he earns enough of what can support his family.
Like any other job, Wasswa says that despite of his prowess to develop his talent, the industry needs a lot of commitment which involves travelling long distances and working in the wee hours but he is so much committed to hustle so that he can earn much from his talent.
Just like any other successful Artist who might have been inspired by someone, Wasswa Hakim Jamba says he is so inspired by Uganda’s best Jazz Instrumentalist Isaiah Katumwa and he is looking forward to making more transformations in the Instrument industry as a contribution to Isaiah’s foundation.
Wasswa advises fellow youth who discovered talents in thier lives to always work hard, insist, love and keeping on trying for them to excel
“We usually find a lot of challenges in the industry but once you keep on trying, you can even shine more than those that have already made it.” Wasswa says.
